Halloween 2005

Well, my kids are definitely getting older and their costumes reflect that!

Last night we carved pumpkins. This is the first year I actually let Nolan carve. I helped him a little and showed him a few tricks I have learned over the years. His pumpkins says "Boo." Michaila won't be allowed to handle a knife until she is 16 because I don't feel like going to the ER! Her pumpkin has a peace sign on it. I know, not traditional, but she is really into this hippie stage, which is fine as long as she stays away from hippie behavior, if you know what I mean.
Trick-or-treating in our neighborhood is a bit sporadic since the houses are so far apart. So, my kids took off with friends to other parts of Byron. I am sure they will come home with so much candy that I will be giving it as prizes to my students! In the meantime, I am sitting in front of the computer working on this class....next topic...critical thinking...grrrr

Goats Do Roam

Brian left yesterday morning. We had a nice weekend. Friday we spent the day alone in Rockford while the kids were at school. We had lunch at JMK Nippon, a local Japanese restaurant. They have great sushi and miso soup so we split a Sushi platter. It was yummy. We also ran to World Market, which has a great wine selection. Brian picked out a few bottles to take back to Nevis. One, he had to buy...it was called "Goats Do Roam." No kidding! World Market usually has good wine, so I can't wait to try it if for nothing else that the name is so Nevisian! That evening we grilled steaks and built a fire in the fireplace.
Saturday Nolan had a soccer game bright and early so we trekked to Oregon. The weather was cold and damp. Plus, the team lost. Nolan played forward again and had a few runs at the goal, but nothing connected. Too bad, but that meant we didn't have to sit in the cold anymore!

The kids wanted to go to Cold Stone Creamery, which is an ice cream store that mixes your flavor with whatever you want. So, we went to Rockford for lunch and ice cream. That evening we made "baseball" food. Real ballpark and hebrew national dogs, soft pretzels, nachos, peanuts, etc. All in honor of the start of the World Series!
Sunday we hung around the house. It was a dreary day outside. Brian played GameBoy with the kids, and we arranged the office so I can study more effectively. It was really a nice day. Monday morning I took Brian to the bus on my way to work.

What have I done?

Well, Brian is somewhere over Chicago getting ready to land as I write this blog-note. We decided a few weeks ago that he should come home over his "break", if you can call it that, and see his wife and kis. All of us are so excited. Since beef (real beef) is rare on the island, I bought two steaks to grill tomorrow. I think he will like that!

Tuesday I started my doctoral program. My head is spinning right now....I don't think I have used this much brain power since I wrote my Master's thesis! My advisor is very good about checking in with me to make sure I am progressing (even though it's only been two days)! Next week will be a huge challege...I have to write a paper about my dreams and aspirations...ie. why I want a doctorate. I hate these type of papers. On top of it, I have to have at least 3 sources...grr. If I pass the first course with a "B" or better I can continue in the program, and I will fly to Phoenix in December for an 8-day residency program. I received the schedule today....it is 8 solid days of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. work. I have never been to Phoenix, but it looks like I won't see it either unless I stay over a day, which is tempting since the Friday session goes until 5 p.m. (7 p.m. Central). That would put me in Rockford after midnight, which sounds awful! So, needless to say, I am wondering what I have gotten myself into. If I just keep telling myself Brian and I will be "Drs. Cubed" I think I'll be fine.

My Life as a Soccer Mom

We've been very fortunate weather-wise this soccer season. Each weekend has been very pleasant. There is usually at least one game that it tries to snow but no this year. Nolan's team is still totally defeated.....yes, you read that correctly....poor kids haven't won a game yet. They enter the tournament at the bottom of the bracket so we can only hope the team they play has even worse luck! I must say this though....they have improved incredibly. Last Saturday Nolan played right forward the entire game and he and the center fielder worked quite well together. I was pretty impressed with their intentional passes! Nolan usually plays mid-field or sweep, so it was exciting to see him in a more aggressive and assertive position. He did a really nice job...and that's not just me as his mother talking. Since he's been playing soccer since pre-K, I have developed a pretty good idea on what's good and what's not.....he definitely has potential!

Michaila has been busy getting her Halloween costume put together. This year she has decided to be a devil. Unfortunately, her idea of devil is a lot more grown up than my idea....that is skirts, heels, lipstick, etc. A bit to sexy for a ten-year-old if you ask me, but she is so excited. And, she is definitely growing up on me. Grrr. Otherwise, she seems to be having a lot of fun at school with her friends Kylie and Elyse.

The White Sox won, which means I am rooting for our cross-town rivals, but you have to root for the home team I guess. I love the playoffs; it really is the best baseball! Tomorrow I start my first doctoral class (nerves are setting in on this one), and I am busy trying to finish out term 1 at work! Yeah, the year is 1/4 done...know what that means? Yep, only 3 terms to go, and I am back on the island!!! Not that Nevis is that great, but at least I get to sleep in the same bed as my husband for more than a week, sun on the beach, and generally relax! Which leads me to the best news of all...Brian will be home late Thursday for the long weekend break. We are looking forward to that a lot! December turned out to be too far away!

Sistine Chapel - Gateway Program Style

In my humanities class we have been studying the Renaissance. Yesterday we spent the day looking at the artwork of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle artists: Donatello, Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo. We spent a great deal of time looking at Michelangelo's work. I was very impressed with how well my kids could interpret and express their feelings regarding this great artist's work. Michelangelo's painting of just the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel took 4 years. It covers 5800 square feet and is 70 feet above ground. He did it all laying on his back or in contorted positions.

My students are very hands-on, and I had given them two days to think how they would express their relationship with their God, higher-power, inspirational leader, etc. in a painting. Once we looked at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, they realized what we would be doing.

Today, they painted their own Sistine Chapel. We used watercolors and the underside of their desks. We have block scheduling, so 85 minutes is a good timeframe for them to complete such an assignment. The students who had a concept of their God, spirituality, or relationship with someone who inspires them had a very easy time with this assignment, and the results were phenomenal! Each student explained his or her panel, and some even made me cry.

One girl painted her friend's inital with the sun shining down because her friend is struggling with cancer, another girl painted the hands of God reaching through the clouds to her as she prays...that's the one above...a boy painted his dad's semi-truck on the road with the boy waving. One girl painted her mother in a park with a rainbow, which they both love. Another boy painted the hand of God in white and the hand of sin in red both trying to grab the earth! A girl, whose mother is a drug addict and left her as a young child, painted herself with her father, who she says has been the only one ever there for her. I could keep going on and on about these.
Once they explained their painting, I hung them on the ceiling of my classroom - just like Michelangelo's masterpiece. Despite their tough exterior these kids are really in need of love and a way to express their feelings about people who've had a positive impact on their life. It's days like this make me realize how much I love my job!

Miscellaneous Thoughts

Michaila ran a 9 minute mile in P.E. and finished third among the girls in her class. I am proud of her! Nolan's soccer team still hasn't won a game, but at least they are scoring goals. I hope they win this weekend! I have been grading papers and watching the baseball playoffs. I think the White Sox really need to soundly win tomorrow to show that last night's 9th inning call wasn't a fluke. Today we had a fire drill at school, in the rain, and one of my student's challenged me to race him to the door, which I did in heels! I almost beat him, but I am pretty sure the principal is going to have something to say. Is it unprofessional, probably...yet, the relationship we have with the kids in my department has to be on a different level than most teachers or the kids don't respond. Oh, and the drama continues with the school board...here is a link on that...which makes me think I am not such a bad influence afterall!

Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses

I can't get this song out of my mind lately...(it's U2 by the way)

You're dangerous 'cause you're honest
You're dangerous, you don't know what you want
Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot
For any spirit to haunt
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey
You're an accident waiting to happen
You're a piece of glass left in a beach
Well you tell me things I know you're not supposed to
Then you leave me just out of reach
Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la

Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee
Well you stole it 'cause I needed the cash
And you killed it 'cause I wanted revenge
Well you lied to me 'cause I asked you to
Baby, can we still be friends

Hey hey sha la la
Hey hey sha la la
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee
Oh, the deeper I spin
Oh, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heavens white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, your gypsy heart
Don't turn around, don't turn around again
Don't turn around, and don't look back
Come on now love, don't you look back
Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna drown in your blue sea
Who's gonna taste your salt water kisses
Who's gonna take the place of me

Who's gonna ride your wild horses
Who's gonna tame the heart of thee

Columbus Day Nonsense

My stupid stove keeps going into powerfailure, and I don't get it... it's really ticking my off.

I had a lot of good conversation through instant messenger with my sister, Donna, today about this, that, and the other. I hope what we talked about has a good "impact" on her life!

This morning I ran 2.2 miles on the treadmill...I think I will need to download some new programs. I am not sure if I am ready to head out on the road by myself as I think I will just quit without the machines "saying", hey, get a move on! I am looking at getting better shoes though. Afterwards I lifted back and shoulders. I am at the point on T-bar rows that I am too strong for one weight, but not strong enough for the next level, which is frustrating.

My mom bought a Volvo, and I am jealous! Maybe some day...at least I can drive hers to test it out first.

I am looking forward to baseball playoffs! I wish it were the Cubs but will settle for the White Sox. Any Chicago team is better than no Chicago team!

I DID IT!!!

This morning was the first time I was able to get through the harder run/jog program on my treadmill without lowering the speed. I put some rockin' U2 on the CD-player at top volume and turned on the TV for some mind-numbing movement. The middle 10 minutes get pretty rough and the treadmill speeds up and slows down (ha - very little) in one minute increments. Last week I was able to get through the run twice and only change the middle speeds once. But today I got through ALL OF IT!!!! YES! I am so proud of myself. You know it's a good workout when sweat drips off your hair!

Homecoming

It's homecoming at Harlem. Yesterday was dress as your favorite hero or villain day. This is one of my former students as "Caesar, Caesar." He has come a long, long way since the day he first stepped into my classroom, and despite his appearance (ha ha) I am proud of him. He has gone from being a neglected and attention-seeking child (who at one time bit me due to a weird series of events!) to a kind and generous young adult. He graduates in December! I hope he decides to go to college because he is one of those kids whose mind is full of curiosity and intellect.

Nolan turns 12

Twelve years ago I was laying in a hospital room begging for a C-section after 32 hours of labor when the doctor finally decided Nolan wouldn't arrive on his own. He was born via C-section at 9:55 p.m. and weighed 8# 12.3 oz.

Earlier tonight I took him out for his favorite: chicken wings and a Panookie at the Fifth Alarm. Panookie is a chocolate chip cookie that is cooked in its own pan and then topped with vanilla ice cream. It is very rich and very good! Afterward, he talked to Brian for a bit via instant messenger and then went off to read the new book I bought him for his present. I already had given Nolan a ZenMicro, which is an iPod knock-off....he has been using that thing constantly. The trouble with kids getting older is that the presents become smaller yet more expensive!

Overall, Nolan has been the most pleasant son anyone could want. (Although I am sure my mother-in-law says that about Brian also!) One of the things I love most about him is that he is kind and compassionate, which is rare in kids his age, and that he has an empathy toward people and animals that is wise beyond his years. We were blessed the day he came in to our lives with a gift more profound than I ever could have imagined.

SIU Homecoming - GO DAWGS GO!!!

Saturday, October 1 was Southern Illinois University Homecoming. Several months ago my sister, Donna, also an SIU alumnae asked if we would like to meet her family in Carbondale for homecoming. Donna and her family lives in Austin. They spent last week on vacation at Disney with Paul's parents and flew in to St. Louis. So, it just made sense to stay the weekend and have a little alum fun!

Paul (Donna's husband) is also an SIU alum as is my other sister, Dawn, and Brian (twice--B.A. and Ph.D.). Paul grew up in Murphysboro, which is only 10 miles or so from Dawg-town (Carbondale), and we were able to stay with his parents, Dan and Judy. They were wonderful and very gracious. The kids and I took over the basement and made it "home" for a day and a half.

The drive from Byron to Carbondale is very loooooooooong. It took us about 7 hours once we got both dogs dropped off at two different places and stopped to eat and take potty breaks. We arrived around 10:30 Friday night. We were up bright and early, and I made Donna walk/jog with me. We managed 1.8 miles. It was a very chilly morning so that was huge motivation to move quickly! The game started at 1:30, so we went to buy some SIU souvenirs before we tailgated. Wow, was it packed! Tailgating has been moved over to the Arena parking lots and there was not a space left! We tailgated right behind a radio booth that was serving food. Paul's friend, Scott I believe, works for that station and hooked us up with some good barbecue! Then, it was off to the game.

Saturday was a bright and sunny day and McAndrew Stadium has absolutely no shade. So, we were roasting pretty well. Marc and Ben were pretty antsy though so we left at half-time. The kids were fine with that because Aunt Donna promised ice cream! Anyway, once we left the game we drove campus to look at the changes that have occurred. A few new buildings have sprouted up, and the president of the University has initiated a revitalization project so a lot of the signage is new and there are plans to rebuild the entrance to the University. The new signs are pretty neat!

We got back to Murphy and ordered up Dairy Queen, then drove by the old house Brian used to live in. Boy, what a pit! Anyway, memory lane. Judy and Dan ordered 17th Street Bar for dinner, which is more pulled pork and ribs. Very very good! Old friends of the family came over and we had a bonfire and the kids cooked s'mores. They seemed to really have fun with that.

Around 9:00 Paul, Donna, Al (Paul's friend - also SIU alum), and I went out. We hit a newer pub called Callahan's, which wasn't there when I was in school. It's a nice place with an Irish feel, and I could order Guinness and Bass. The Guinness was a little too cold. We also went to some dance bar connected to Callahan's (these all used to be the old Checkers). So, we danced and had fun. We tried to get in to Pinch Penny, but the line was long and it was almost closing time so went back to Callahan's and played darts. Al hit a few bullseyes to pull us in to the lead, but closing time came so we had to leave.

So, off we went to obtain a known Dawg-town after bar snack - a bagel! A Winston bagel cart was set up across the street from Pinch, and we got in line. Boy, people can be idiots when they are intoxicated! We waited and waited and waited in line and couldn't figure out what was taking so long. One guy kept "close talking" to all of us about crap. He was so drunk, so Al took him aside and told him to knock it off real nice. Then, a chick in front of us starts griping about how long it is taking to get a bagel and that its because all the old 34-year-olds are butting in line. Well, do you think I had an issue with that??? So, I start in on her. Basically, I tell her to knock it off and that she is being a jerk. So, she tries to get back at me, "I'm not talking about you." YADA - YADA!!! Anyway, I end up chewing her out and telling her this is homecoming, that I am 35, and her comments are asinine, etc. Donna is behind me telling me to chill, and Al comes back from the drunk guy and stands in front of me - not sure why since I can pretty much handle it. Well, little chickie backed down....which is good for her - that's all I have to say on that.
We waited a little longer and dumped the bagel idea, but lo and behold, Winston's competition is parked across the street without a line so I order up a bagel with sunflower seeds - just like old times! After that we jump in the car, go back to Dan and Judy's where Al and Paul relight the bonfire. Donna gave up first, and I followed close behind at 4:00 a.m. Apparently Al and Paul gave up around 5:15.

When I woke up Dan and Judy were making waffles and bacon for the kids. They also served up a huge pot of coffee. Al ended up crashing on the extra couch in the basement, which is good since I don't think either he or Paul were in any shape to drive. Anyway, it was a great weekend and the kids had fun playing with their cousins, and I had fun playing with my sister. It was really nice to see campus again too! We told the kids stories as we drove around campus about all the silly stuff we did and which buildings we "lived" in. Michaila has decided to go to Southern...not sure how I feel about that yet :) I am sure I am forgetting a lot more details, but this blog entry is getting to be VERY long so.......

Oh, I almost forgot...SIU beat Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri) in overtime! GO DAWGS GO!
